01 — Context

Juice Pro and IB Pro are the Mauritius Commercial Bank’s (MCB) mobile and internet banking services for businesses, from micro enterprises to mid-market companies. From 2022 we worked with MCB’s JuicePro squad on the UX and UI design of both: how businesses sign up, how they pay and approve payments, and what the app should show them first. With the bank’s Customer Lab, we interviewed and tested new features with the entrepreneurs who use them every day.

02 — The problem

Signing up meant different paths for new and existing customers, on mobile and on desktop. International transfers were only available on the MCB website, so entrepreneurs had to wait until they were back at a desktop to pay abroad, and payments that need a second approver waited too. And entrepreneurs running several companies had to log out and back in to move between them.

03 — The solution

International transfers brought into the Juice Pro app; guided self-registration on Juice Pro and IB Pro, with OTP and Smart Approve built into the flow; payments and approvals that can be completed on the go; and a new home page and company switch shaped by usability testing with real customers.

04 — What we did

Designed with the entrepreneurs who use it

01

Self-registration flows

We designed the sign-up journeys for Juice Pro on mobile and IB Pro on desktop, for new and existing users, including OTP and Smart Approve verification.

02

Mobile banking UX/UI

International transfers, local payments, beneficiaries, business overdraft requests and Juice Merchant sign-up, designed screen by screen in MCB’s visual language.

03

User research and testing

With MCB’s Customer Lab, we interviewed entrepreneurs and ran remote prototype tests, an A/B test of three home page options and card-sorting sessions.

04

Feature prioritisation

Card sorting ranked the home page and Business Finance Management features, feeding a RICE prioritisation of what to build next.

05 — What we delivered

  • International transfers on mobileInternational fund transfers, until then only available on the MCB website, brought into the Juice Pro app. It was one of the features entrepreneurs asked for most in our interviews, and a key milestone for the app: feature parity with IB Pro, payments abroad on the go, fewer branch visits, and less manual processing for the bank.
  • A guided foreign-currency flowPick the country, then add the beneficiary by IBAN or account number, with the bank name and SWIFT code filled in automatically and the right fields asked for each country. Purpose of payment, controlled-goods permits, fee options (own, shared or beneficiary) and deal-ticket detection for negotiated rates follow, before a review, OTP verification and approval by a second signatory when needed. We planned it in phases, starting with a SWIFT-transfer MVP.
  • Self-registrationStep-by-step sign-up for Juice Pro and IB Pro, for new and existing customers, from identity verification to setting up an mPIN.
  • Payments and approvalsOwn-account, MCB, local bank and Scan to Pay transfers, with payments that wait for a second approver and approvals handled from the app.
  • Company switchMove between companies without logging out. Every participant completed the flow in testing, which also showed where they expected to find it: next to log out.
  • New home pageAccount overview, cash-flow chart, company switch and quick actions first, from the A/B test of three options; offers and other non-transactional content further down.

06 — Outcome

Bringing international transfers to mobile delivered one of the most requested features, so businesses no longer wait to get back to a desktop to pay abroad. In testing, every participant completed the scenarios and rated the experience positively: 100% scenario success and 100% overall satisfaction. In the home page A/B test, 5 of 7 participants chose the same option, mainly for its quick actions, and 6 of 7 removed the knowledge and business-solutions corners. The findings gave MCB a home page built around what businesses do first — check balances, switch company, act on payments — and a prioritised list of the features they asked for next.
